NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Beneath the towering presence of historic ships at the Mariner’s Museum, leaders from across Virginia gathered last week not to look back, but to chart a bold course forward.

The Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation (VIPC) hosted a reception ahead of its board meeting, drawing entrepreneurs, researchers, civic leaders, and community builders from across Hampton Roads and beyond. The evening became a showcase of what’s possible when innovation and collaboration are woven into the fabric of a region.

Joe Benevento, CEO of VIPC, reminded attendees of the organization’s central mission: to strengthen Virginia’s innovation economy from the ground up. He pointed to VIPC’s role in fueling Virginia’s innovation economy by connecting startups, investors, universities, and industry. Through early-stage funding, venture investments, SBIR support, and regional ecosystem grants, VIPC helps entrepreneurs move ideas from lab to market, strengthens local innovation hubs, and attracts follow-on private capital. From defense and maritime in Hampton Roads to life sciences, cyber, and advanced manufacturing across the Commonwealth, VIPC is a catalyst for growth and collaboration.

Nancy Grden, CEO of the Hampton Roads Executive Roundtable, built on that theme of collaboration in her remarks. She highlighted VIPC’s support of the collaborative work that Innovate Hampton Roads has accomplished to amplify the story of Hampton Roads’ entrepreneurial ecosystem, pointing specifically to the co-sponsorship of the Startup World Cup Virginia regionals.

That event, held in August, was itself a testament to the power of collaboration. With 742 attendees and ten top startups from across the Commonwealth pitching their ideas, it became one of the largest gatherings of innovators in Virginia this year. Local startups like Sales-E, Crunchy Hydration, AttorneyLive, EdLogics, NGZ AI, and VroomBrick stood shoulder to shoulder with founders from across the state, proving that Hampton Roads is not just part of Virginia’s innovation story; it’s helping to write it.

She spotlighted the groundbreaking partnership between 757 Collab and the Mid-Atlantic Tech Bridge to launch 757 Defend, the Commonwealth’s first-ever defense accelerator. Designed to support entrepreneurs solving national security challenges, the initiative underscores Hampton Roads’ unique position at the intersection of defense, technology, and entrepreneurship.

For Hampton Roads, VIPC’s presence carries weight. The corporation has long been a catalyst for innovation across Virginia, bridging the gap between ideas and the investment or partnerships needed to bring them to life. In regions like Hampton Roads, where federal labs, research institutions, and entrepreneurial hubs sit side by side, VIPC’s role is particularly transformative.

What emerged at the Mariners’ Museum was more than just networking. It was a reminder that Hampton Roads is steadily stepping into its own as a hub of innovation. With state-level champions like VIPC working hand in hand with local leaders, the region is positioning itself to grow companies that don’t just survive here but thrive here; and in turn, those companies help shape Virginia’s future economy.

As the evening closed, one message lingered: collaboration is no longer optional. In a world defined by disruption, Hampton Roads is showing that when communities, institutions, and innovators come together, they can build an economy as resilient and forward-looking as the ships that once carried America into uncharted waters.
