A new data center planned for Jefferson Lab in Newport News could strengthen Hampton Roads’ place in the national infrastructure behind scientific discovery, artificial intelligence and advanced computing.
Jefferson Lab recently broke ground on the Jefferson Lab Data Center, a new facility that will eventually house the Department of Energy’s High Performance Data Facility (HPDF). The facility is designed to help researchers securely access, connect and analyze scientific data generated at national laboratories and user facilities across the country.
“The Jefferson Lab Data Center positions Hampton Roads at the forefront of a new era of scientific discovery driven by data, artificial intelligence and advanced computing,” Jefferson Lab said in response to questions from Innovate Hampton Roads.
The project builds on Jefferson Lab’s long-standing role in nuclear physics while expanding the region’s connection to high-performance computing and data-intensive research.
“While Jefferson Lab has long been recognized as a world leader in nuclear physics, this project expands the region’s role as a national hub for high-performance computing and data-intensive research,” Jefferson Lab said.
The facility also arrives as regional leaders have increasingly emphasized Hampton Roads’ strengths in defense, energy, aerospace and logistics, including during Innovate Hampton Roads’ recent State of Innovation Address. Each of those sectors increasingly depends on the ability to securely move, analyze and use large amounts of data.
“The technologies and expertise developed through this facility have applications well beyond scientific research,” Jefferson Lab said. “The ability to securely connect, analyze and manage massive amounts of data using advanced computing and AI is increasingly important across sectors such as defense, energy, aerospace and logistics.”
Jefferson Lab officials said the Data Center and High Performance Data Facility could also help attract talent, strengthen university partnerships, support workforce development and contribute to the region’s broader innovation ecosystem.
For many people, the phrase “data center” may bring to mind a commercial server farm. Jefferson Lab said this facility is something different.
“This is not a commercial data center designed to support cloud services, streaming platforms or online retail,” Jefferson Lab said. “The Jefferson Lab Data Center is purpose-built for science.”
The facility will help researchers securely access, connect and analyze scientific data from across the Department of Energy research ecosystem. Rather than simply storing information, the facility is designed to help scientists make better use of data regardless of where it was originally created.
“Think of it less as a warehouse storing information and more as a highly intelligent research hub that helps scientists find, connect and use data regardless of where it was originally created,” Jefferson Lab said.
That capability could accelerate discoveries in fields ranging from nuclear physics and advanced materials to energy technologies, medicine and understanding the origins of life in the universe.
Jefferson Lab offered a simple way to think about the facility.
“The easiest way to think about it is as critical infrastructure for scientific discovery,” Jefferson Lab said. “Just as highways move people and goods, this facility will help move knowledge and enable researchers to access and analyze information faster than ever before.”
Many technologies used in everyday life, including medical imaging, cancer treatments, energy technologies and advanced manufacturing, trace their roots to scientific research. According to Jefferson Lab, the new facility will help scientists answer complex questions more quickly, make better use of taxpayer-funded research and accelerate innovation that ultimately benefits everyday life.
For Hampton Roads, the project represents a significant investment in scientific and technological infrastructure and reflects the region’s growing connection to national research and innovation efforts.
