When most people think about shipbuilding, they picture massive dry docks, aircraft carriers and submarines taking shape along the waterfront.
But that’s only part of the story.
Behind every vessel is a much larger industrial network of engineers, suppliers, manufacturers, fabrication shops and waterfront facilities that make construction possible. As demand for new naval vessels grows, that supporting ecosystem is becoming just as important as the shipyards themselves.
Fairlead is one example of that shift.
Since becoming an independent company in 2012, the Hampton Roads-based company has expanded from two small product divisions into a business with approximately 500 employees operating roughly 160 acres of mostly waterfront property. Along the way, it has added modular ship construction, expanded its waterfront footprint and invested in facilities designed to increase the region’s capacity to support the U.S. Navy and the broader maritime industry.
That distinction matters.
During a recent episode of The Fervent Four Show, Fairlead President Fred Pasquine explained that the company’s vision isn’t to replace traditional shipbuilders. Instead, it’s to add capacity by developing infrastructure and capabilities that strengthen the entire maritime ecosystem.
Technology is playing a role in that evolution as well.
Pasquine described how Google Gemini completed an engineering task that previously required up to 160 hours of work in just minutes. Rather than replacing engineers, he sees artificial intelligence helping teams eliminate repetitive work so they can spend more time solving complex engineering challenges.
The combination of expanding industrial capacity and adopting new technology reflects a broader trend taking shape across Hampton Roads.
Innovation in the maritime industry isn’t limited to new ships. It’s also happening in the companies building components, modernizing engineering workflows, redeveloping waterfront properties and creating the infrastructure needed to support the Navy’s future fleet.
For decades, Hampton Roads has been one of America’s premier shipbuilding regions.
The next chapter isn’t simply about building more ships.
It’s about building the capacity to build them.
