Hey, Hampton Roads! At Innovate Hampton Roads, we’re all about spotlighting the bold ideas, resilient startups, and game-changing collaborations that make our region a hotspot for entrepreneurship. Today, we’re diving fork-first into an event that’s not just about great food—it’s a delicious testament to the creative hustle defining our local economy. Enter Downtown Norfolk Restaurant Week, running right now through July 27, 2025, with the catchy theme “Dish Is How We Do It.” This isn’t your average dine-out deal; it’s a celebration of culinary entrepreneurs who are innovating on plates, supporting local supply chains, and building vibrant businesses that elevate our community.
For those new to the scene, Downtown Norfolk Restaurant Week has been a staple since at least the early 2010s, evolving into a biannual powerhouse that draws crowds in January and July.
What started as a way to boost off-season business has grown into a showcase of resilience and ingenuity, especially post-pandemic, where restaurants adapted with creative menus and outdoor setups to keep the entrepreneurial spirit alive. Fast-forward to 2025, and this summer edition features 24 diverse eateries, each embodying the innovation we champion here at Innovate Hampton Roads. From bootstrapped bistros to tech-savvy wineries, these spots highlight how entrepreneurs in Hampton Roads are blending tradition with fresh ideas—like sourcing local seafood sustainably or fusing global flavors with Virginia twists.
Picture this: You’re networking over a $45 dinner at Capo Capo, savoring a Mongolian Pork Chop with potato puree, sautéed spinach, and mustard glaze—a dish that screams bold experimentation. Or grab a $20 brunch at The Stockpot Norfolk, where Dominican pulled pork sandwiches on authentic Cuban baguettes meet seared green tomatoes and fried eggs, topped with tomato crema and avocado. It’s innovation in every bite! Other highlights include 219 Bistro’s bacon-wrapped scallops with chipotle-goat cheese risotto and strawberry gastrique, or Ordinaire’s Crab: Three Ways lunch featuring she-crab soup, lump crab cake, and fried softshell crab with lemon-blackened aioli. With fixed-price tiers at $20 for lunches and brunches, plus $35 or $45 dinners, it’s an accessible entry point for aspiring foodpreneurs to study market trends or for investors to scout the next big culinary startup.
Mary Miller, President and CEO of Downtown Norfolk Council, nails it: “‘Dish Is How We Do It’ is more than a theme; it’s a statement about the pride and creativity our culinary community brings to the table every single day. Restaurant Week is the perfect time for the entire community to experience that passion firsthand.” We couldn’t agree more—events like this are rocket fuel for our ecosystem. They drive foot traffic, generate buzz, and create ripple effects: Local farmers supply ingredients, designers craft atmospheres, and tech tools handle reservations. In a region where startups like those in our Fervent Four Show are pushing boundaries in health tech and beyond, Restaurant Week reminds us that innovation thrives in unexpected places, like a historic church-turned-eatery at Freemason Abbey or the modern vibes at Grain.
As viewers of Innovate Hampton Roads, this benefits you directly. It’s a chance to support fellow entrepreneurs, spark ideas for your own ventures (maybe a food tech app?), and network amid the flavors. Our region’s dining scene has exploded, paralleling growth in sectors like maritime tech and biotech—think how events like this bolster economic vitality, with past weeks seeing packed houses despite challenges like weather or economic dips. By dining out, you’re investing in the progress we’ve achieved: From humble beginnings to a premier destination, Downtown Norfolk’s evolution mirrors Hampton Roads’ entrepreneurial journey.
