Hampton Mayor Jimmy Gray announced a major new investment from HII during his inaugural State of the City address. The parent company of Newport News Shipbuilding will spend $28 million to upgrade its 150,000-square-foot building off Commander Shepard Boulevard, converting it into a light manufacturing advanced technologies facility.

Gray highlighted the project as an important step in supporting the region’s shipbuilding and defense workforce. The upgraded facility will focus on advanced manufacturing that contributes directly to the production of aircraft carriers and submarines.

In a video message played during the event, Xavier Beale, Vice President of Human Resources for Newport News Shipbuilding, said the investment strengthens the company’s long-standing relationship with Hampton. He explained that the renovated site will house “some of the most technologically advanced manufacturing machines known to mankind,” with the ability to print a wide range of metal alloys, from pounds to tons.

Beale emphasized that the facility’s capabilities will support key Navy programs and deepen the company’s ties to the city.
